the existential experience

Is this you?

Do you often feel busy, stressed, exhausted? Do you find yourself trying awfully hard to remain hopeful in the face of relentless, daily adversity? Does your life kind of...suck?

If so, I empathize with your condition. If not, you're wrong.

Is this you?

When I was a kid, I had a dream of a massive Italian villa overlooking the Mediterranean. Every day, I would glide across the wrap-around porch of my villa, my shoes clicking theatrically against the stone floor as I went. From there, I would stomp through the loggia, stopping at the door of secret, villainous library, which would, of course, be dimly lit and full to the ceiling with old, sweet-smelling books. I would spend my days living a life of leisure, with nothing to do but look beautiful and look at beautiful things.

But enough about me.

How are you? Is your life everything you thought it would be? Would you say you’re living your dreams? Probably not, right, if you’re thinking of a similar fantasy as me?

No, I would guess that you aren’t, that we are all living the same hellish nightmare in which we are promised everything but may realize nothing. As grim as it sounds, that nightmare is life.

Life fucking sucks.

But you don’t think that. You’re just living a cute little life, aren’t you? You went to college, moved to some major American city where you met your current spouse. Maybe you have a couple of young kids, or one on the way. Maybe you’re still engaged. Either way, you’ve been quite lucky thus far, haven’t you? Aw yeah, good for you.

It’s cute that you think that.

Or maybe this isn’t you. Maybe you’re older, nearing 40? 50? You’re a pro at this whole life thing, right? There’s nothing you could possible learn from me. It is what it is, and what it is is perfectly fine. You tell yourself you enjoy the little things in life, but that same day, you find yourself having a crying fit deciding what to wear to a Christmas party or unable to stop yourself from buying that bottle of gas station wine. No matter what you do, you can’t help but occasionally wonder about the past lives lived by your younger self, the dreams you once had, now abandoned, and what could have been if you had done it all differently.

Doesn’t it all feel so hopeless? Limiting? Claustrophobic? Do you feel trapped?

Right, so cut the bullshit. Your life sucks.

And I’m gonna prove it to you.

Have a taste.

Let's do this.
